Just days after the NFL announced new regulations demanding players show “respect” for the national anthem, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) is vowing to boycott the league over the “idiotic” measure.
The new policy requires athletes and team personnel on the field to “stand and show respect for the flag and the anthem” during the patriotic ceremony. If anyone fails to comply with the leaguewide rule, the team will be subjected to fines.
The teams will also be permitted to pass fines along to any player or personnel for anthem-related infractions. It should be noted those who do not wish to stand are permitted to remain in the locker room until the anthem is completed.
Ellison, deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee, is not at all happy with the policy change and doesn’t plan to watch any NFL games this coming season:
Friends who know me, know that I love football. But I won’t be watching this NFL season because of the unfair cowardly and idiotic kneeling ban. #BoycottNFL

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) faced intense backlash from the left last week after she said during an appearance on CNN that she has an affinity for “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
“I love the national anthem,” she told CNN’s Chris Cuomo. ”[I]’m very possessive of it. Sometimes, people say, ‘Maybe we should change the national anthem.’ No. I’m from Baltimore. I love the national anthem, and I love the flag.”
Pelosi, it should be noted, made clear she believes players should be allowed to protest if they so choose because, while she is a fan of the national anthem, she also “loves” the First Amendment.
